AN ACT TO AMEND THE CANADA LABOUR CODE, THE CANADA STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ACT, THE CANADA STUDENT LOANS ACT AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYMENT ACT

Order Fixing April 18, 2008 as the Date of the Coming into Force of Certain Sections of the Act

Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, pursuant to section 7 of An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code, the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act, the Canada Student Loans Act and the Public Service Employment Act, chapter 15 of the Statutes of Canada, 2008, hereby fixes April 18, 2008 as the day on which sections 1 and 6 of that Act come into force.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order.)

The Order fixes April 18, 2008 as the day on which sections 1 and 6 of An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code, the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act, the Canada Student Loans Act and the Public Service Employment Act (“the Act”) come into force.

Section 1 of the Act amends theCanada Labour Code to provide an entitlement to leave of absence from employment for members of the reserve force who take part in certain military activities and operations in Canada and abroad. The amendments made by this section also prohibit employers from discriminating against employees on the basis that they are members of the reserve force.

Section 6 of the Act amends the Public Service Employment Act to provide federal public service employees who are members of the reserve force with the right to return to their position at the end of a leave of absence that they take in order to take part in an operation or activity referred to in the Canada Labour Code.
