Valley Gospel Mission Remission Order

Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, considering that it is in the public interest to do so, on the recommendation of the Minister of National Revenue, pursuant to subsection 23(2) (see footnote a) of the Financial Administration Act, hereby remits to Valley Gospel Mission the amount of $1,232.60 being tax paid under Division II of Part IX of the Excise Tax Act and related interest in respect of the sale of religious books during the period beginning on April 1, 1997 and ending on September 30, 2001.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order.)

The Order remits $1,232.60 to Valley Gospel Mission, representing the provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax and $138.02 in related interest, paid in error by the organization on the sale of religious books to customers in the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador throughout the period April 1, 1997 to September 30, 2001. The remission is granted as a result of misleading advice on the part of Canada Revenue Agency officials that led Valley Gospel Mission to remit the tax and interest to the Receiver General in error.
