AN ACT TO AMEND THE NATIONAL DEFENCE ACT, THE DNA IDENTIFICATION ACT AND THE CRIMINAL CODE

Order Fixing June 30, 2000 as the Date of the Coming into Force of the Act

Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Solicitor General of Canada, pursuant to section 26 of An Act to amend the National Defence Act, the DNA Identification Act and the Criminal Code, assented to on June 29, 2000, being chapter 10 of the Statutes of Canada 2000, hereby fixes June 30, 2000, as the day on which that Act comes into force

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order.)

The Order brings An Act to amend the National Defence Act, the DNA Identification Act and the Criminal Code into force on June 30, 2000.

The National Defence Act is being amended to authorize military judges to issue DNA warrants in the investigation of designated offences committed by a person who is subject to the Code of Service Discipline. Military judges will also be authorized to order military offenders convicted of a designated offence to provide samples of bodily substances for the purposes of the national DNA date bank.

The Act also amends the DNA Identification Act and the Criminal Code in support of the above-noted amendments and to ensure effective implementation of the national DNA date bank.
