Proclamation Authorizing the Issue and Prescribing the Composition, Dimensions and Designs of Various Precious Metal Coins

A Proclamation

Whereas subsection 5.1(1) and paragraph 5.1(2)(a) of the Royal Canadian Mint Act provide that the Governor in Council may, by proclamation, authorize the issue of precious metal coins of a description, and of the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight applicable to that description, specified in Part I of the schedule to that Act and prescribe the dimensions and designs of any precious metal coins;

Now Know You that We, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council for Canada and pursuant to Orders in Council P.C. 1998-232 of February 19, 1998 and P.C. 1998-1324 of July 15, 1998, do by this Our Proclamation authorize the issue and prescribe the dimensions and designs of the following precious metal coins:

(a) a fifty cent coin

(i) the composition of which shall be silver, and the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight of which shall be as specified in Part I of the schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act,

(ii) the diameter of which shall be 29.72 mm,

(iii) the design of the obverse impression of which shall be the approved effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA" to the left and to the right, respectively, with the initials "D.H." on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, and beads around the edge, and

(iv) the design of the reverse impression of which shall depict the inscription "50 CENTS CANADA 1908-1998" in the centre, with a maple leaf branch to the left and the right around the circumference of the coin, the stems of which are tied in a ribbon-like bow at the bottom of the coin, with a crown at the top of the coin and beads around the edge;

(b) a twenty-five cent coin

(i) the composition of which shall be silver, and the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight of which shall be as specified in Part I of the schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act,

(ii) the diameter of which shall be 23.62 mm,

(iii) the design of the obverse impression of which shall be the approved effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA" to the left and to the right, respectively, with the initials "D.H." on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, and beads around the edge, and

(iv) the design of the reverse impression of which shall depict the inscription "25 CENTS CANADA 1908-1998" in the centre, with a maple leaf branch to the left and the right around the circumference of the coin, the stems of which are tied in a ribbon-like bow at the bottom of the coin, with a crown at the top of the coin and beads around the edge;

(c) a ten cent coin

(i) the composition of which shall be silver, and the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight of which shall be as specified in Part I of the schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act,

(ii) the diameter of which shall be 18.03 mm,

(iii) the design of the obverse impression of which shall be the approved effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA" to the left and to the right, respectively, with the initials "D.H." on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, and beads around the edge, and

(iv) the design of the reverse impression of which shall depict the inscription "10 CENTS CANADA 1908-1998" in the centre, with a maple leaf branch to the left and the right around the circumference of the coin, the stems of which are tied in a ribbon-like bow at the bottom of the coin, with a crown at the top of the coin and beads around the edge;

(d) a five cent coin

(i) the composition of which shall be silver, and the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight of which shall be as specified in Part I of the schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act,

(ii) the diameter of which shall be 15.50 mm,

(iii) the design of the obverse impression of which shall be the approved effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA" to the left and to the right, respectively, with the initials "D.H." on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, and beads around the edge, and

(iv) the design of the reverse impression of which shall depict the inscription "5 CENTS CANADA 1908-1998" in the centre, with a maple leaf branch to the left and the right around the circumference of the coin, the stems of which are tied in a ribbon-like bow at the bottom of the coin, with a crown at the top of the coin and beads around the edge; and

(e) a one cent coin

(i) the composition of which shall be copper-plated silver, and the standards, margin of tolerance and least current weight of which shall be as specified in Part I of the schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act,

(ii) the diameter of which shall be 25.40 mm,

(iii) the design of the obverse impression of which shall be the approved effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA" to the left and to the right, respectively, with the initials "D.H." on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, and beads around the edge, and

(iv) the design of the reverse impression of which shall depict the inscription "ONE CENT 1908-1998" in the centre surrounded by a ring of beading, with a serpentine-style wreath of maple leaves around the circumference of the coin and beads around the edge.

Of All Which Our Loving Subjects and all others whom these Presents may concern are hereby required to take notice and to govern themselves accordingly.

In Testimony Whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent and the Great Seal of Canada to be hereunto affixed. Witness: The Honourable Frank Iacobucci, a Judge of the Supreme court of Canada and Deputy of Our Right Trusty and Well-beloved Roméo A. LeBlanc, a Member of Our Privy Council for Canada, Chancellor and Principal Companion of Our Order of Canada, Chancellor and Commander of Our Order of Military Merit, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.
