ORDERS IN COUNCIL

DEPARTMENT OF CANADIAN HERITAGE

Order Amending the Order Requesting the CRTC to Seek Comments from the Public and to Report Concerning French-language Broadcasting Services in the French Linguistic Minority Communities in Canada

P.C. 2000-1102 July 27, 2000

Whereas the Governor in Council, by Order in Council P.C. 2000-511 of April 5, 2000, requested the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to seek comments from the public and to report at the earliest possible time, but no later than December 31, 2000, to

(a) assess the availability and the quality of French-language broadcasting services in the French linguistic minority communities in Canada;

(b) identify any deficiencies and challenges in the above communities to the provision of French-language broadcasting services — radio, television, specialty, pay and pay-per-view services — comprising public, private and community elements, and the availability of French-language broadcasting services on the various broadcasting distribution systems; and

(c) propose measures to encourage and facilitate access to the widest range of French-language broadcasting services possible in French linguistic minority communities and to ensure that the diversity of French-language communities across Canada is reflected in the Canadian broadcasting system;

Whereas, following requests by the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada (FCFA), the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française (FCCF), the Alliance des radios communautaires du Canada (ARCC) and the Alliance des producteurs francophones du Canada (APFC), the Commission extended to August 31, 2000, the deadline it had originally set for the receipt of comments from the public;

Whereas it is in the public interest that the comments which the Commission receives from the public be as complete as possible and that the Commission have adequate time to reach its conclusions;

Therefore, Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, hereby amends Order in Council P.C. 2000-511 of April 5, 2000, replacing the date "December 31, 2000" by "February 12, 2001."
